The star of Las Picosas is undoubtedly the torta ahogada, a signature dish that both challenges and delights the palate. The sandwich, drenched in a robust, spicy sauce, perfectly balances heat with depth—a true homage to Guadalajara’s culinary heritage. For those who crave heat but desire moderation, the option of a half-soaked torta provides a brilliant way to savor the intense flavors without overwhelming the senses.
Complementing the tortas are the tacos dorados ahogados, featuring expertly prepared carnitas that meld tender meat with crisped tortillas, all enveloped in Las Picosas’ distinct spicy sauce. The freshness of each ingredient speaks to the brand’s commitment to quality, while the rich layering of sauces showcases skilled craftsmanship rooted in tradition.
Customer experiences highlight not only the exceptional taste but also the warm, attentive service that adds to the welcoming environment. The authentic Guadalajara feel permeates every bite and interaction, making it a rare find outside of Mexico. The encouragement to bring your own beer or enjoy a classic michelada mug further enriches the cultural immersion.
Overall, Las Picosas excels by combining authenticity with innovation, delivering bold Mexican flavors that resonate deeply with those who appreciate intensity and tradition. It is a must-visit for lovers of spicy, well-crafted Mexican street food seeking a genuine taste of Jalisco in Chicago.

Repeatedly hailed as the best in town, it's no wonder that this dish draws food enthusiasts from far and wide. Upon the recommendation of numerous satisfied customers, I decided to indulge in the Torta Ahogada with "everything" and an extra dose of the signature sauce. As the plate arrived, I was immediately struck by the aroma – a tantalizing blend of spices and slow-cooked pork. The first bite was a revelation. The pork, tender and succulent, practically melted in my mouth, while the richness of the sauce enveloped every morsel in a fiery embrace. The spiciness of the sauce was perfectly balanced, adding depth and complexity to each bite without overpowering the palate. “ This place is amazing! If you go, go for what they are known for. Tortas ahogadas. Amazing!!! But super spicy which we loved! If you not a fan of spicy stuff, then definitely not a place for you. The flavor is so darn good and meat taste so good. We got the tortas half soaked which was the way to go since it was really spicy so we had half that wasn't soaked to calm down the spiciness. We got the chicken nuggets for the kids and a taco for my other one. They both liked it a lot as well. Horchata was pretty good as well. Definitely will try this place out again. I wish they had one of these by me in Joliet/Plainfield. ”
“ Good customer service, tortas ahogadas were really good. For sure a Guadalajara atmosphere inside, really close flavor of torta ahogada from Jalisco. ”
“ Loved it. It is hard to find a tortas ahogadas place outside of Jalisco. This place delivered very good quality and very good taste. We would have wanted to have tacos a little bit more crispy but in general was good. Tortas were good ingredients and sauces were very nice, meat could be improved and bread as well. Bring your own beer and ask for a michelada mug. You will not be disappointed. ”
“ Delicious Mexican food, always fresh and delicious. The staff is friendly. My favorite menu items to order are the Torta Ahogadas & Tacos Dorados Ahogadas. I LOVE how spicy the sauce is and the Carnitas are made to perfection. ”
